Ford . How to Remove Grand Prix HeadlightsThe Pontiac Grand Prix has a headlight assembly that is one of the simplest on the market to remove. The headlight is held in place with just a few pieces of hardware that are accessible without removing any extraneous components of the engine compartment, such as a battery or reservoir, or pieces of the bulkhead. For this reason, it shouldn't take you more than a 15 minutes to remove the headlights from your Pontiac Grand Prix. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Crescent wrench or 10-mm socket wrench Phillips screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Turn off your Pontiac Grand Prix and prop open the hood. 2 Loosen the top screw on the headlight assembly. Do not take it out completely. 3 Remove the two 10-mm bolts holding the headlight to the mounting bracket. The bolts run vertically through the bracket just above the headlight. 4 Wiggle the end of the headlight at the turn-signal side through the fender. Press the black tab on the inner grille side away from the slot it goes through and pull the headlight out of its cavity. Do not jerk the headlight away as it is still connected to the Grand Prix by a wiring harness. 5 Turn the headlight over. Detach it from the wiring harness by pressing the side tabs on the harness and pulling it off.
Ford . How to Safely Remove a Rearview Mirror MountRemoving the mount for your rearview mirror can seem like a daunting task--it almost seems like the car manufacturer built it right into the glass of the windshield. Fortunately, this is not the case. With a little preparation, you can remove your rearview mirror mount. Unfortunately, if you do not remove it correctly, you could end up breaking your rearview mirror or damaging your car's windshield. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Razor blade Cloth Alcohol Step by Step : 1 Move your car to a place where the windshield will face the sun no less than two or three hours. Face the car south for the best results and remove obstructions that could block the hot sun. The sun will help soften the strong adhesive that holds your rearview mirror mount in place. 2 Scratch at the sides of the rearview mirror mount with a razor blade. Do not scratch your windshield as you do this. When your razor blade has a substantial amount of glue on it, wipe it onto a piece of cloth to clean the blade. Scrape around all the sides of the mirror. 3 Grasp the base of the rearview mirror mount firmly after you remove a good portion of the glue that bonds it to the glass. Gently twist the mirror right and left until it starts to pull free of the glass. Do not yank or pry it off the glass or you may break something. 4 Wash the glue spot off your mirror with an alcohol-soaked cloth. Do not give the glue time to dry or cool off before you wipe it away or it will be almost impossible to remove. Tips & Warnings Examine your rearview mirror to determine if a screw holds your mirror in place. Some rearview mirrors require the use a screwdriver to separate the mirror from the mount before removing the mount. If you do not have enough sunlight to remove the rearview mirror mount, use a hair dryer to heat the mount. Aim a hair dryer at the base of the rearview mirror housing and leave it there for at least two hours. If alcohol does not remove the glue from the windshield, use acetone. Remember to use caution when using acetone and always keep your work area well ventilated. *Major engine components Inside the engine are several fascinating parts (see Figure 6-11). At the top are the cylinder heads. These contain the mechanisms that allow the valves to open and close, letting the fuel/air mixture into the cylinders and allowing the burnt exhaust gases to leave. Below the cylinder heads is the engine block itself. This piece contains the cylinders, which in turn contain the pistons. Improvements to fuel injection systems One exciting way that fuel injection systems are Now, I'm all in favor of simplification — ever being perfected is the tendency to replace since my mother taught me to always buy the moving parts with stationary ones, and "solid" washing machine with the fewest gadgets on parts with intangible substances. You may save don't get as big a bang for your buck, and your money in the long run by trading in the old "fuel car loses power. Piston rings can be replaced. hog" for a more efficient vehicle. The cylinders on vehicles with rear-wheel drive run from the front of the engine back toward the firewall at the rear of the engine compartment. On vehicles with front-wheel drive, the engine is usually combined with the transmission into a single unit called a transaxle. These engines are called transverse engines because they're set sideways between the wheels of the car and their cylinders run from side to side (see Figure 6-13). "Straight" (or "in-line") engines have a single row of cylinders, V-type engines have two parallel rows of cylinders. On rotary engines (found on some Mazdas) the cylinders radiate outward from the center like spokes on a wheel. Each cylinder has a number, determined by the particular engine's cylinder sequence. You can find descriptions and illustrations of the cylinder sequence for a variety of engines in Chapter 13. Inside each cylinder is a metal piston, which fits snugly against the walls of the cylinder so that nothing can get past it. On the outside of the piston are piston rings that ensure a snug fit. The cylinder also has other openings besides the ones for the spark plug and the piston. These are for the intake valves and the exhaust valves. At the bottom of the engine is the crankcase, which houses the crankshaft and the oil pan. Water circulates throughout the engine to keep it cool, and oil circulates to keep the parts moving freely. Now that you've met the "players," you're ready to get on to the main event they're designed to participate in: the fiery meeting of air, fuel, and fire known as the four-stroke power cycle.
